Szechenyi Chain Bridge

Széchenyi Chain Bridge - Budapest, Hungary
This series is documentary of an era, as I know and remember the Széchenyi Chain Bridge that soon to be renovated. It was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark in 1839. This was the first permanent bridge in the Hungarian capital after its opening in 1849. The bridge's cast-iron structure was updated and strengthened in 1914. During World War II it was blown up by the retreating German armies in 1945. Only the two towers survived. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1949. During the long years the necessary maintenance work was almost completely ignored mainly due to money issues, so much so that nowadays the structure is becoming dangerous at some points. It’s going to be closed in 2021 February for almost complete renovation. Sadly, there’s not enough money to solve all the issues.

Follow me in this journey to see the oldest and one of the most beautiful bridge in Budapest.
